In this beginner-friendly woodturning class, you’ll learn how to turn your very own wooden bowl using a midi lathe and Rockler’s easy-to-use carbide turning tools. Guided step-by-step by an experienced instructor, you’ll shape, hollow, smooth, and finish a bowl approximately 6"" in diameter, gaining the confidence and foundational skills needed to continue your turning journey.

 

What You'll Do:

  • Mount your bowl blank onto the lathe
  • Learn proper stance, tool control, and safe turning techniques
  • Shape and hollow your wooden bowl using beginner-friendly carbide turning tools
  • Refine the form with smoothing cuts
  • Sand your bowl to a smooth finish
  • Apply a food-safe finish to bring out the natural grain

 

What's Included:

  • All materials, bowl blanks, and supplies
  • Use of Rockler carbide turning tools
  • Use of a Laguna 12|16 Midi Lathe
  • Rockler safety gear (provided at no additional charge)

  • Ages 14+ — minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian
  • Class is beginner-friendly — no prior turning experience needed
  • All tools, materials, and safety equipment are provided

In this hands-on class, you’ll create your own custom wooden pen using a Rockler pen hardware kit and a variety of beautiful wood species. This beginner-friendly workshop will guide you through the full pen turning process—from preparing your blank to shaping, sanding, finishing, and final assembly—resulting in a functional, handcrafted pen you’ll be proud to use or gift.

 

What You'll Do:

  • Select your pen blank from a variety of domestic and exotic wood species
  • Cut your blank to length using a bandsaw
  • Drill the blank to accept the brass tube using a drill press
  • Mount the blank on a lathe using a pen mandrel
  • Turn and shape your pen using Rockler carbide turning tools
  • Sand the pen to a smooth finish
  • Apply a durable, easy-to-use finish
  • Assemble the pen hardware using a pen press
