Chechen often showcases a striking multi-colored grain pattern and high polish that mimics a true dalbergia rosewood. That and its density explain the alternate name ''Caribbean rosewood.'' Chechen's highly varied color range includes brown, pink, red, gold, and black, all with a shimmering iridescence. Colors tend to darken to a reddish brown over time. Texture is medium to fine, and uniform, with good natural luster. Fairly easy to work; glues and finishes well.
